1963 Peel P50 makes £49,500 at Brightwells Classic Car Auction

Published 22 July 2018

A 1963 Peel P50 single seat microcar (similar to the one driven through the BBC offices by Jeremy Clarkson) sold for £49,500 at Brightwells Classic Car Auction a Leominster on 11th July.

With 119 vehicles on offer, bidders came from as far afield as Australia, Israel and Saudi Arabia. Top price of the day was £135,500 paid for an early ‘flat floor’ 1961 Jaguar E-Type 3.8 Roadster, recently overhauled by CMC and with the benefit of a later 5-speed synchromesh transmission.

An exceptionally smart 1966 Austin-Healey 3000 MkIII BJ8 with less than 3,000 miles since a concours quality restoration was sold for a mid-estimate £69,850 while a truly immaculate 1965 Sunbeam Tiger MkI with only 250 miles since a total nut-and-bolt rebuild made £57,200.

A rare 1973 BMW 3.0 CSL in Golf Yellow, one of only 500 made in RHD and in need of recommissioning following 18 years in Carcoon storage made £88,000 while a 1974 BMW 2002 Turbo in Chamonix White, one of 1,672 made and also from long-term storage raised £67,100.

A new house record was £22,000 achieved by a restored 1958 Austin-Healey Frogeye Sprite (a model currently on the up). And £20,900 was an excellent result for a 1955 TF on offer that had been fitted with an MGB engine and running gear in the 1960s.

The 1949 Bristol 400 was one of only around 420 made and just needing minor jobs to finish an otherwise high quality restoration. It fetched £57,200.

A beautifully restored and uprated 1972 Triumph TR6 set a new house record for a TR6 of £30,250.

A 1934 Morgan Super Sports project car with non-original JAP engine, Cat C marker in its history unused for several years fetched £19,250. While, compared to the £49,500 paid for the Peel P50, £11,000 looked good value for a 1961 BMW Isetta 300.

A 1994 Morgan Plus 4 Four-Seater with an alloy body and only 27,200 miles raised £20,900 from a Belgian buyer. A 1985 Morgan 4/4 Two-Seater in need of recommissioning fetched £12,650.

A nice 1930 Alvis TJ 12/50 sold at £19,800; a 1935 Rolls-Royce 20/25 with formal Park Ward swept-tail limousine coachwork made £18,700; a well-restored 1922 Wolseley 10 open two-seater made £16,500 and an interesting c.1928 Crossley 20.9 Tourer project finisedh on £13,860. A 1929 Austin 7 Chummy in need of light recommissioning raised £12,100 while an attractive 1936 boat-tail Austin 7 Special made £8,800.

Other results included £16,500 for a 1973 Volvo P1800 ES with under 60k miles; £14,300 for a smart 1962 Ford Consul Classic Capri; £13,200 apiece for a lovely 1992 Alfa Spider S4 and a 1959 MG Magnette MkIII both with only 18k miles; £10,450 for a 59k miles 1983 Ford Sierra XR4i and £19,580 for a high quality Porsche Speedster replica by Apal.

The three non-runner military vehicle projects on offer also sold well: a 1953 Daimler Ferret making £6,600 while two amphibious Soviet armoured personnel carriers from the mid-1980s made £8,800 for an eight-wheeled BTR-80 and £7,150 for a tracked MT-LB.
