Super lightweight Porsche Leichtbau set for auction

Published 02 May 2017

A 1993 Porsche 911 Turbo S Leichtbau could make up to £575,000 when it heads to auction on Saturday, 13 May.

One of 51 made, it is a limited-edition, light-weight, road-legal version of the 964 Turbo (a car of which only 86 examples were made). It will be offered for sale by Silverstone Auctions at the May Sale, held at Silverstone circuit in Northamptonshire.

Powered by a 381bhp 3.3-litre engine and mated to a G50 five-speed gearbox, the car features a host of weight-saving options such as aluminium doors, thinner glass, thinner carpets, Kevlar luggage lid and rear spoiler – saving 180kg in total.

The car also has side air intakes in front of the rear-wheel openings, a flatter, body-coloured rear wing and air intakes to cool the brakes.

This example was completed on 13 December, 1992, and is one of six finished in Gloss Black, with a black leather interior and triple tone Recaro seats in Rubystone with matching steering wheel.

Registered in the UK on 1 January, 2014, and well maintained by its current owner, the car will be offered at auction with a sale estimate of £475,000 to £575,000.

Harry Whale, classic car specialist, Silverstone Auctions, ‘The Leichtbau is one of the most exciting 911s available with unique rarity and stunning looks.’

A comprehensive 230-point Porsche report carried out under the instruction of the auction house confirms the car is a matching numbers example checked against a data print from Porsche Cars GB. An unwarranted mileage of 68,868kms (42,792 miles) is said to be consistent with the condition of body and interior.
