Rare Porsche 911 goes from shed to show-stopper

Ever wondered what people do when they buy a ‘barn find’ at auction? Well here’s one answer. This 1975 Porsche 911 Carrera 2.7 MFI Coupe – one of just 21 made – was bought as a project at auction in 2015. Over the past 16 months it has been restored and will go under the hammer at this year’s NEC classic motor show later this month.

The car, which had been off the road for seven years before it was sold in 2015 and had just 55k on the clock, attracted plenty of interest and sold for £146,250. Now, after a restoration for an undisclosed fee, the new owner is hoping the car will fetch between £240,000 and £280,000 at the Silverstone Auctions sale on 12 November.

Over the past 16 months, the model was stripped and rebuilt by specialist Porsche restorers RS 911. Once they got into it, it proved a very smart buy because other than two new front wings and basic perishable items, the rest of the car was re-comissioned using existing components that were repaired or renovated.

The suspension, brakes, differential and electrics were all rebuilt and the original interior cleaned up, re-stitched and restored. The fully rebuilt engine and gearbox were reunited with the car having been balanced and tuned by Porsche engine builders Tech 9 Motorsport. Just before the car is offered at auction, the owner is hoping to reunite the Porsche with its original owner.

‘The results of this restoration must be seen to be fully appreciated. ‘RS 911' have done a fantastic job, the engine sounds superb, and this 911 can now be returned to the road in its former glory,’ said Will Smith, sales manager at Silverstone Auctions.

Complete with original tools, radio, windscreen transfers, wallet, service manuals and ownership paraphernalia, the car’s history file includes six service stamps in the original service book. There is also a large number of bills and photographs documenting the complete restoration process, as well as letters between the current owner and the supplying dealer in 1975.
