Mercedes 540 K makes £2m at auction

A 1938 Mercedes-Benz 540 K Cabriolet A sold for £2,034,396 at auction in Stuttgart, Germany.

The car went under the hammer at Bonhams’ Mercedes-Benz Museum sale on Saturday, 28 March.

It was a good day for selling cars with a total sale value of £9.5m and 92.9% of all lots sold by value.

Although the 540 K was the top seller, a 1931 770 ‘Grosser Mercedes’ Cabriolet D gave it a run for its money. The car, once owned by German actor and director Erik, sold for (£1,703,806).

Elsewhere, four iconic 300SLs – both Gullwing coupés and roadsters – made strong money.

Top lot of the series was the 1960 Mercedes-Benz 300SL Roadster previously owned by German industrialist Alfried Krupp, which £826,473.

And a 1961 300SL disc brake roadster that had spent 48 years in one family made £805,281.

A 1957 300SL roadster with factory hardtop sold for £779,851, while a 1957 Gullwing Coupé, sold for £771,375.

Additional highlights include a 1957 Mercedes-Benz 300 SC Coupé, sold for £422,137, and a 115-year-old Benz Ideal 4½ Vis-à-Vis, pictured below, sold for £156,818.
