I purchased a pre-registered Rover 400iL Saloon in October 1999 and she has served us well over the years. Known to us fondly as Rosie, she would regularly cover the 244 miles between our home in South Essex and Llangollen in four and a half hours. The route was partly on motorways and speed limites were strictly obeyed. The ride has always been good whatever the distance covered. Long runs return around 48 mpg, local trips in the range of 30-35mpg. Build quality is very good. An accident when three years old involving a Hiace truck that failed to stop at a junction and struck the car causing significant damage proved the strength bodyshell and the doors still functioned normally. The head gasket failed after 11 years and an upgraded replacement fitted. The original steel spare wheel was replaced by a fifth alloy wheel. The garage maintaining the vehicle have an instruction to deal with any advisory matters that arise when the MOT is due rather than defer to latter. The only blemishes are one dimple on a door panel - caused when the air pump connector sprung out of my hand(!) and the piping around the leather driver's seat has cracked - well it is the most used seat in the car. Both are relatively minor issues. Yes, she was replaced about three years ago but I kept her and it was a wise move. Within three weeks the newcomer was seen-off and she was back in her garage. Why? The ride quality of the replacement was nowhere near the quality of a fifteen year old Rover and with spinal osteo-arthritis that is an issue for me. Value for money? Yes. Expensive to maintain. No. Current mileage 75200 miles. Is she a Classic? I reckon she's entitled. What of the future - we are growing old gracefully together. Read more

I had three Rovers. 200, 25 and now 416. The best cars I ever had. Rover has a class and is made from quality materials. Far better quality than newer cars.

I know a lady who owns one. Hideously unreliable, though that is mostly the stupid automatic gearbox rather than the pluriel bits. Read more

If you ow one of these you will love it to its dying day. Can vouch for the reliability and cant beat the space for 4 peoples unlike a mini convertible. Shall keep my next one to remain in the family for several generations like the quirky classic it is and pretty too. xxx

Absolutely spot on. I watch Wheeler Dealers for the mechanics, not Mike. If Velocity want to reduce the time showing the mechanics of the cars then I truly believe that this is the beginning of the end for Wheeler Dealers. People are'nt going to want to sit and watch Mike Brewer for the majority of the show. Hopefully when viewing figures start to drop, this is just to save money remember, maybe Velocity might change their minds,I doubt it.
Changing a winning formula usually means its not a good thing to do,but.......

Sad to hear Edd is to leave Wheeler Dealers, but like Edd I felt going 'State-side' has changed the 'feel' of the series, taking it off in a direction I for one was fast beginning to lose interest in. Wheeler Dealers was at its best covering our own native and European car industries which is where most of the interest this side of the pond is found. Good luck to him, hats-off for retaining integrity which is seldom the case nowadays, and with a bit of luck the BBC will entice him to Top Gear and eventually Ant too! I might even start watching TG again 'cos it certainly ain't working as it is at the moment! Read more

@Edd Thank you for your contribution. Watching the WD shows with you involved has helped to reinforce what I already knew but also gave some insight into other areas that I would have only discovered through many years of experience / cost if the opportunity arised (some potentially lost to history).
Thankfully that is a foundation of engineering but there are very few people in all of out lives that we can truly refer back to. You sir are one of them for many.
Thank you and all the best for your future.

Time to retire the show? Or will Ant take it to a whole new level? Read more

A comment from an American viewer.

Ed was definitely the main reason to watch WD and his departure is a loss. Ant is well enough, but clearly the content of the show has been dumbed down.

I was pleased to see the show spend a season in the US and work on some American iron but the European cars that were less familiar over here were even more of an attraction.

Hopefully Ed's new show will be available to American audiences as currently only Fantomworks is a worthwhile watch on Velocity.

Ed china was what made this show so watchable he was so skilled not just a mouthpiece

There's just as much mechanical stuff as there always was. Ant is actually really great and explains thing really well. Ant had a blackboard out showing exactly how a turbo works. I would prefer if it was set in England but it's still great. I've got no idea why Mike gets so much grief. He didn't sack Edd, Edd left. Long live Wheeler Dealers.

I quite agree.Ant is an Insufferably smug annoying presenter. It's been the one program I've genuinely looked forward to for years. Ed was right, it's the spannering part of the show that is by far the most interesting. Its amazing that tv producers can be so out of touch with their audience?

A worthy car for the top 10 classics from Wheeler Dealers. These cars have an amazing survival rate which is unlikely to be matched by any current models. These cars are sufficiently interesting to enjoy for the long term. I know since I purchased my Triumph Stag brand new in 1973 and I have never regretted keeping it. I also own a Mercedes SL - R230 which I regard has a future classic but I still adore my Triumph Stag. Read more
