Top 10: Euro NCAP family car results
The European New Car Assessment Programme (or Euro NCAP for short) was launched in 1997 to independently test the safety and crashworthiness of new cars, initially awarding each car a maximum of five stars for adult occupant protection and four for pedestrian safety.
We’ve already taken a look at the results of ’90s superminis, so now’s the turn of that era’s family cars. These are the mid-range saloons and hatchbacks that pounded the motorways throughout the late ’90s and beyond, popular with family car buyers and company sales reps alike. Replacing the Sierra in 1993 was the front-wheel drive Mondeo, Ford’s vital new model for the company car sector. In original guise it went on to be a best-seller, but how did it do safety-wise? Pedestrian protection was given a two-star score, while the adult occupant rating was three stars, but with a similar ‘strike through’ of the third star as the Audi A4: ‘Although this top-selling family hatchback received a three-star rating for its overall performance, the results from the side-impact test failed to meet standards laid down for the crash testing of new models from next year’.
