I'm having trouble getting my MG MGF into gear - any ideas on what could be the problem?

I have a 1997 MG MGF 1.8 VVC, 30,000 miles. It's extremely difficult to get it into gear. In retrospect, I think the gears have been getting stiffer for some time. There's no problem when the engine isn't running. Also, if I pump the clutch pedal when the engine is running it is not as bad. Any ideas?

The first thing to check is the master cylinder - is there enough fluid in it? When was it last changed? The system may need bleeding or may be leaking. If the fault is not with the master cylinder, try looking for the same problems at the slave cylinder. Sometimes, the slave cylinder rod can stick - so check that as well.
