Is it time to scrap my beloved 1997 Jaguar XJ6?

My beloved 20 year old Jaguar XJ6 has developed electrical problems, due partly to water getting into the wiring. My mechanic has sourced some used parts (Jaguar don't make them any more), but the immobiliser can't be bypassed. So, now most of the electrics work but the car won't start. It's been off the road for two months. It has a three year old set of refurbished alloys, but the paintwork (British Racing Green) is showing blotches and, as it won't go, is it worth anything? My mechanic is at a loss (I've used him for years, no problems), so maybe I should call it a day after 17 years of wonderful ownership. Any advice?

Electrical issues are, unfortunately, the Achilles heel of many modern classics. But don't give up hope just yet - because the answer might be closer than you think. We're very lucky to have several fantastic Jaguar clubs in the UK - two of the biggest are the Drivers' Club (www.jaguardriver.co.uk/) and the Enthusiasts' Club (jec.org.uk/). Each should have a register for the XJ6 and there's a good chance that someone in the club will have experienced similar problems to you. If you want to keep the car, keep the faith... but just be prepared to dip into your savings should you require a few more spares.
