Starting problem

I have an intermittent starting problem with my Jaguar XJS. The petrol pump should run for 10-15 seconds after switching the ignition to prime the system and stop when the fuel supply is full. This initial stage is intermittent and when it doesn't work there is no way the car will start. Is this an ECU problem and what can I do to get round this?

It's a fault with the low pressure sender pump, its relay or the earth to the sender pump or relay. It's probably a Lucas pump and these have always been notorious for failure. In the 1960s, sensible Jaguar drivers always carried a spare Lucas pump in case of failure.
