Which model and spec old Mini would you recommend for my son?

My son is looking for one of the old style Minis (he's always wanted one). What model/spec do you recommend up to £1500?

I don't. They are all rustbuckets. But better to go for a real old one on 10-inch wheels than one of the later horrible ones on 12-inch wheels that have very few redeeming features.
