1400 idle at Cowley as strike continues
Three hundred more workers have been laid off at BL's Cowley plant near Oxford because of the strike which has so far cost the company an estimated £10m The number of workers idle is now 1,400 and 100 employees of a Coventry components company have also been sent home.
No Acclaim or Rover cars have been made at Cowley since 220 workers in a trim shop walked out more than a week ago in protest at management plans to switch jobs for production to start on the new LM11 model this spring. At a meeting on Wednesday the strikers decided to stay out until at least Monday.
