Rover pledges new MG sports car

24 April 1990

DAILY EXPRESS
By David Benson

Rover has promised to revive the classic MG sports car.

"MG is a great marque in its own right and we will no longer use it for cynical badge engineering on our mass produced passenger cars," said commercial director Kevin Morley. "It will only be used again for a real MG sports car which we are designing at the moment."

Roy Axe, head of styling at Rover and responsible for the successful 200 and 400 series, will design a car to replace the best-loved open two-seater ever built. It needs to be cheaper than the new Mazda MX-5 and the Lotus Elan, the current trend setters for affordable open sports cars.
