Austin-Rover to offer 400 new jobs

Austin-Rover is to recruit 400 new workers at its Longbridge and Drews Lane plants, near Birmingham, to manufacture a Japanese gearbox under licence. The news was welcomed by union leaders last night. They had feared the Government's decision not to provide further financial backing for the company would force it to stop manufacturing gearboxes. The company buys gear- boxes from Volkswagen in Germany for some versions of the Maestro and Montego.

More expensive versions are already fitted with the new Honda five-speed gearbox, which will now be manufactured instead of imported.
