BL in the Winter of Discontent

THE GUARDIAN

THE WINTER OF DISCONTENT

The 7,500 workers laid off from the Cowley car factories go back to work tomorrow. The return---more than a week after being sent home because of the lorry drivers strike follows settlements reached with haulage contractors in South Wales.

The Austin Morris assembly plant had closed when it ran out of heaters and radiators made by a Leyland plant in Llanelli.

An earlier move to get Cowley based drivers to go to Llanelli to pick up the car parts was thwarted by the TGWU. Austin Morris has lost more than a weeks production worth £12m.
