Cowley men warned

22 October 1973

British Leyland which had its Marina car production at Cowley stopped during last week, with losses of £5m, issued an ultimatum to 5,000 of its assembly line men during the weekend.

It told them that the plant will be reopened today and those who want to go back to work can do so. But they must accept a new and tough policy over unofficial strikes that has been spelled out by the management. This seems certain to provoke an angry response from militant groups.

In the ultimatum sent by post to 5,000 workers at the weekend, British Leyland stated that it has no intention of departing from the terms of the agreement which exclude lay-off pay during internal disputes.
