British Leyland moving van plant to Scotland

Van production is to be transferred by British Leyland from Adderly Park, Birmingham, to its factory at Bathgate, West Lothian. About 85 new jobs will be created when assembly starts shortly. A company spokesman said yesterday: "Assembly facilities are being installed and production will begin towards the end of the year. The introduction of the AE van to the Red Line range will result initially, in about 85 jobs."
Mr Stan McKeown, convener of the joint shop stewards committee at Bathgate, said: "In the initial stages there was opposition to the van moving out of Adderly Park. but a deputation of Bathgate shop stewards met their counterparts in the south for discussions and the opposition was removed."
