Back To Work

Strikes at two car plants on Merseyside ended yesterday, although production at one of them , the Triumph factory at Speke , will not be back to normal until today. About 2,500 Triumph employees had been laid off because of a two-week old strike by 75 jig operators , and the company is having to phase production back to normal.

The Speke strike had also caused a stoppage by 9,000 Triumph workers at the company's Coventry plant , which is supplied with car bodies from Merseyside. The Coventry workers , who walked out in protest at proposals for a rota system of lay-offs, will also be back at work today. Talks about the dispute that led to the Merseyside strike , increased bonus payments, are continuing.
