Disc brake shortage halts work on E-type

Production of Jaguar's E- type sports car stopped last night and 50 men were laid off because of the continuing shortage of disc brakes from Girling. Although the strike at Girling Bromborough, ended with a return to work yesterday morning, it will be several days before normal supplies are resumed.

Rover recall 1,500 men to work on the "2000" and "3500" models assembly track today, but warned last night that unless depleted stocks of brakes are rapidly imroved they may have to be laid off again. Electricians on strike at British Leyland, Cowley, met yesterday and voted to continue their week old strike. All production is at a standstill and 4,000 men are idle.

Elsewhere in the industry, the picture brightened with a return to work by men in one of the two strikes at British Leyland's Austin Morris assembly plant at Longbridge. Three hundred men are still laid of there because of a strike on the 1800 model assembly line.
