Industrial action

1 July 1968

DAILY EXPRESS

The week-long strike of 140 British Road Services drivers in Birmingham, which hit production of BMC ended yesterday when the men voted to return to work today. This meant 7,000 workers at the Pressed Steel Fisher plant, Castle Bromwich, and the Austin factory, Longbridge, will also be returning to normal on both day and night shifts.

The strike followed disagreement between Oxford and Birmingham drivers over how many vehicles each group should move from Castle Bromwich to Longbridge. It ended when shop steward Chris Binion told the Birmingham men he was presenting certain proposals to the B.R.S. management.

Said B.M.C.: "Now we want all our employees back at work as quickly as possible to catch up with export orders in particular."
