Car-Delivery Men To Continue Strike

24 September 1963

FROM OUR CORRESPONDENT OXFORD, SEPT. 23

Oxford car delivery drivers voted overwhelmingly tonight to continue their strike now a week old, for a 42-hour, five-day week with overtime Pay.

The chairman of the meeting, Mr D. Walker, reported to the 250 of the 450 strikers present that the employers had refused to go to arbitration on the dispute. Only eight voted against continuing the strike.

Mr Cifford Crawley, Oxford district organizer of the Transport and General Workers' Union; to which the drivers belong. announced that a distress fund was being launched. The drivers deliver new cars from Morris Motors at Cowley and from the M.G. Car company at Abingdon to distributors and to the docks for export. B.M.C. say that so far they have not been affected by the strike.
