Jaguar Lay Off 1,600

27 August 1963

FROM OUR CORRESPONDENT
COVENTRY, AUG. 26

Jaguar Cars, whose production was resumed this morning after being halted by a pay dispute since last Thursday, had to announce a few hours later the laying off of some 1,600 assembly workers, and others because the strike had caused a shortage of finished painted car bodies. The men were told to report back on Wednesday morning. A further 600 working on engine assembly, in test departments and other sections will be laid off tomorrow.

Earlier the 20 strikers in the body shop returned to work. This enabled the remaining 3,000 workers in the Brown's Lane factory to resume and for talks to start with the management on the men's grievances over waiting time payments.
