Dispute Slows Car Bodies Flow

27 May 1963

FROM OUR CORRESPONDENT
OXFORD, MAY 26

An unofficial strike by 206 skilled men at the Pressed Steel Company, Oxford, which has caused 4,500 of their fellow workers to be laid off, is slowing the flow of car bodies to much of the motor industry.

Shop stewards of the Amalgamated Engineering Union there are not to hold a meeting of strikers until after a meeting of the national executive early this week. The strike began last Thursday after the company's rejection of a claim by several hundred skilled workers for a "substantial" increase in pay. Pressed Steel make car bodies for Rootes, B.M.C., and Jaguar.
