Workers Support B.M.C. Extension

3 January 1963

FROM OUR CORRESPONDENT
BIRMINGHAM, JAN. 2

The British Motor Corporation's plans to extend their Birmingham factory in the face of local opposition were supported today by representatives of their 23,000 employees.  At a Ministry of Housing and Local Government inquiry into the plan to extend the premises at Longbridge into 52 acres of the proposed green belt land at Cofton Hackett, Worcestershire, Mr R. A. Etheridge, convener of the Austin shop stewards, said he was mainly concerned with the employment position. Expansion was necessary so that employment should be maintained in increasing automation.

Opposing the scheme, Mr J. C. Pridham, Worcestershire's deputy planning officer, said: "However well landscaped this works extension cannot fail to be an alien intrusion into the green belt."

The inquiry was adjourned until tomorrow.
