Joint Talks On Car Firm Suggested

28 August 1961

FROM OUR CORRESPONDENT
COVENTRY, AUG. 27

Leviand Motors have asked union leaders in Coventry to attend joint talks to discuss the future of the Leyland subsidiary Standard Triumph International Company. Ltd.

Union leaders who tonight welcomed the move were also discussing the news that 2,500 Standard workers will begin a three-day week from September 4. Mr Douglas Fairbairn, Coventry district secretary of the Confederation of Shipbuilding and Engineering Unions, said tonight that the local employers' association were trying to fix a suitable date for the joint talks.  "Presumably Leylands want a full and frank discussion on the future."

The short-time working at Standards will affect Triumph Herald production workers. A combination of falling exports, the economic situation and seasonal recession is believed to be responsible.
