10,000 B.M.C. Jobs Threatened

20 June 1961

FROM OUR OWN CORRESPONDENT
BIRMINGHAM, JUNE 19

More British Motor Corporation employees are likely to be laid off tomorrow if the Cricklewood strike continues.

The management expect that about 10,000 men may have stopped work by the end of the week as the stock of instruments made by the London firm becomes exhausted. This has been a day of improvisation at B.M.C. with officials anxiously seeking to minimize the damage done by the strike.

Already 1,200 Austin workers have been laid off and production of the A55 and the A99 has stopped.

At Coventry, all overtime has been stopped at the works of Standard- Triumph International, and the firm will review the position tomorrow.
