Men Strike Again At Car Body Works

20 December 1960

FROM OUR CORRESPONDENT
BIRMINGHAM, DEC. 19

About 200 maintenance workers at the British Motor Corporation body building factory of Fisher and Ludlow, Ltd. at Erdington, Birmingham, today resumed their strike which has caused 1,200 other workers at the factory to be laid off.

The maintenance men are seeking a five-day week instead of the four-and-a-half day week they are working, and last Thursday they declared certain machinery in the factory " black ". Four men who were ordered to work on these machines refused to do so and the men walked out. They decided to resume work today but having done so they went on strike again when work was again ordered on the " black " machines. They intend to report for work again tomorrow. A B.M.C. spokesman said that unless the dispute was settled quickly more men would have to be laid off at Fisher and Ludlow's, and other B.M.C. plants would also be affected.
