1000 Car Workers Walk Out

8 September 1960

FROM OUR CORRESPONDENT
BIRMINGHAM, SEPT. 7

About 1,000 vehicle builders employed at the British Motor Corporation's car body factory of Nuffield Metal Products in Birmingham walked out on unofficial strike today, and later a B.M.C. spokesman said that unless the men accepted a union recommendation to return to work tomorrow morning production at the Morris factory at Oxford would be affected during the day. The dispute arises out of the system of payment of "waiting time" when production is held up by delays in delivery of components, and the men struck after the breakdown of domestic discussions in the factory on a claim for an increase in this payment.

Mr George Evans, the district organizer of the National Union of Vehicle Builders, said that the management had given a flat "no " to the men's claim. Had there been more flexibility in the management attitude the strike would never have happened, he said.
