1800 Car Workers Laid Off

13 February 1960

Between 1,800 and 2,000 workers at the Rover car factory at Solihull, near Birmingham, were laid off last night for the second time in a fortnight because of disruption of production caused by a strike of 39 welders at a branch factory at Coventry.

The welders, who make sub- assemblies for the Land-Rover, went on strike on January 28. The next day 220 sheet metal workers at the main Solihull factory downed tools in sympathy and three days later 2,000 workers were laid off. Production resumed when the 220 sheet metal workers went back to work on Monday.
