24-hour strike by Rover inspectors

25 June 1959

FROM OUR OWN CORRESPONDENT
BIRMINGHAM, JUNE 24

Strike action by engineering inspectors, which has already halted production at the Jaguar factory at Coventry, broke out in another section of the motor industry to-day. Five large factories of the Rover Company Ltd. here were affected by a 24-hour token stoppage of 400 inspectors in support of a wage claim.

The 220 works inspectors on strike at the Jaguar car factory at Coventry voted yesterday to return to work to-day

MORRIS MOTORS TIME WORKERS' PROTEST
FROM OUR CORRESPONDENT
OXFORD, JUNE 24

A spokesman for Morris Motors workers today described 'as "nonsense" a statement made by the management that the complete labour force walked out yesterday "in protest at the amount of time lost recently through strikes at other factories."

The time workers believe that they should not be sent home because they, unlike piecerate workers, cannot make up their earnings.
Today the 300 Pressed Steel Company workers who were sent home yesterday were back at work, as were the 4,500 Morris Motors men who were sent home later when the flow of bodies from the Pressed Steel factory stopped.
