1200 men made idle by strike

5 June 1959

Twelve hundred men from Morris Motors, Oxford. were sent home today after an unofficial strike by 42 paint-shop workers over a pay dispute.

At another British Motor Corporation plant, the sports car factory at Abingdon, Berkshire, 150 men working on the Austin Healey Sprite were also sent home. The effect of the strike was felt at the Oxford factory of the Pressed Steel Company, where between 400 and 500 men employed on making B.M.C. car bodies were made idle. The men affected at Morris Motors were working on the Farina-styled range of models.
