How can I free off my 2003 BMW 325Ci's handbrake?

The button on the handbrake in my 2003 BMW 325Ci is stuck pushed in, and as such I can no longer get it to grab when I pull it up. Is there a way I can fix this myself?

Maybe WD40 or Vaseline will free it off.
