Mazda 323 won't start

My Mazda 323 refuses to turn over. I've managed to jump start it and drive home, but the car emits a smell of burning rubber, with smoke coming from under the bonnet. The water bottle is low and the lights won't come on. Any idea what could be wrong?

If by water bottle you mean radiator header tank it reads like the waterpump may have failed and is straining the timing belt but it can't have slipped cogs or you would not haver got home. Also reads as if the alternator belt is slipping, but that might be because the alternator has failed and that explains the rubber burning smell and lack of lights. Halfords branches are open on Sundays, but simply replacing the belt may not solve the problem.
