Land Rover dealer warranty on repairs

I've just bought a 2012 Land Rover Defender. The seller advised that 2 weeks before the 3 year Land Rover warranty ran out, the oil pump failed wrecking the engine, so the Land Rover main dealer who supplied the car replaced the engine and the new engine had only covered 150 miles.
I contacted the main dealer to enquire about the warranty on the new engine, and they advised that they had indeed fitted a brand new engine, but the warranty ran out after the original 3 years! So there was no warranty attached to the parts or labour for their work. This can't be legal surely, if you have new parts fitted to your car surely they are covered by a 12 month warranty?

Why can't it be legal? That's what a warranty is. It covers for replacement of parts up to the end of the warranty period. It does not start a fresh, free-of-charge warranty on the replaced parts. So if you want them to be covered, take out an aftermarket warranty with Warranty Direct or Warranty Wise.
