Can you answer my technical questions on diesel engines?

I have a few queries on diesel cars that I would be grateful for your advice on. 1. With regards to the diesel particulate burning cycle, what is the effect on mpg (and approximate quantity of fuel used) that the DPF burning cycle will have? 2. What is the typical lifespan of the diesel fuel tank lifter pump? 3. What is the typical lifespan of fuel injectors on modern common rail systems? 4. Piezo Injectors - I read about these being problematic. Is there an inherent design weakness and if so what is it that fails?

1. Depends on the car, the type of system used and the drive cycle of the car. Cars run for short distances will need more fuel to regenerate their DPFs than cars driven long distances where the DPF naturally burns off the soot. 2. No 'typical' lifespan. They are common failures on Volkswagens, Citroens and Rover 75s. 3. Independent specialists used to reckon about 80,000 miles before they started to dribble. 4. It's because Piezo injectors are very precise and this makes them vulnerable to bad fuel.
