Why isn't my Ford C-Max returning quoted mpg figures?

Last year I bought a brand new 2012 Ford C-Max Zetec, and I have got to say the mpg I am getting is nowhere near as good as the manufacturer stated. I understand I will not get 68.9mpg. However, I have never even got within 25mpg of that. I have been using Shell V-Power since the first hundred miles. My driving style is good and I always make the appropriate gear changes as the indicator advises. So why am I only getting 36mpg locally and around 43mpg on the motorway? I always ensure the tyre pressure is good.

The average mpg that other drivers are getting with C-Max is collected and reported here: www.honestjohn.co.uk/realmpg/ford/c-max-2010. The real results vary from 94 per cent to 77 per cent of the EC lab test figures. I reckon there’s a difference of around 10mpg between cruising at 80mph and cruising at 70mph.
