Why are certain models of car getting bigger?

I see that the new F30 3 Series BMW will be available soon and that it is to be bigger. I wonder why car manufacturer's assume that people always want bigger cars? My present 2009 3-Series Touring is exactly the right size; a compromise of being big enough when capacity is needed but not too big to use and park on other occasions. If I had wanted a 5-Series I would have bought one. I previously owned an Audi A4 but this model grew progressively as each new model was announced and I was pleased that the current 3-Series BMW was a similar size to my older A4. Perhaps the 1-Series will grow to the size of the 3-Series and eventually another base model will be made.

Ford has also progressively increased the sizes of its cars. A Mondeo is the size of a Scorpio, a Focus is the size of a Cortina, a Fiesta is the size of an Escort and a Ka is the size of a Fiesta. Same with Volkswagens. A Golf is now the size of a Passat, a Polo is the size of an original Golf, and now the new Up! is the size of an original Polo. If you want smaller, go one size down.
