I've been offered good deals on the Toyota Avensis and Citroen C5 D Tourers - which should I pick?

I've been offered good deals on the 2.0 D Tourer versions of both the Toyota Avensis & the Citroen C5 VTR. There is little to chose between them on price - the Toyota is just a bit more, but the Citroen only has delivery mileage. Looks-wise, I'd give the vote just to Citroen and the C5 is a more comfortable ride. My concern is about relative depreciation rates. Will the Citroen be worth a lot less than the Toyota in three years' time?

It very much depends on how much you can negotiate off. The more you get off the price, the more you insulate against depreciation. In percentage terms, you'll get lower depreciation with the Toyota based on list price, but that's all academic if you can get a better discount on the Citroen. The latest C5 is a far superior car to the previous model and as a result it doesn't lose its value in the same way as the old one did. The two cars are covered in detail here: www.honestjohn.co.uk/carbycar/toyota/avensis-2009 and www.honestjohn.co.uk/carbycar/citroen/c5-ii-2008.
