What first car for a 25-year-old who drive high miles?

My Son has just been offered a job in Sheffield which would mean him leaving home and buying his first car. He has been driving 7 years (he is 25) and although he has no no claims bonus, he has been a named driver for this 7 years.

He is likely to be driving 20k miles pa (mainly work based) and so is looking for a comfortable, reliable, economical car. He gets both an annual and mileage allowance.

He is willing to look at both new and used.

What would you recommend?
