Which car for a treacherous coastal commute?

I am looking for a nearly new small to medium sized automatic for a daily commute of about 55 miles each way along a hilly coastal road - often in very poor weather conditions. Safety, reliability and fuel economy are priorities. I should be grateful for your advice on what to buy.

I drove a Mazda 2 1.5 Activematic 850 kilometres through the floods in Thailand 2 years ago, so I can vouch for that.
