Tyre choice for improved ride

I recently bought an ex-demonstrator Citroen C3 Picasso - it was a good deal, but came with Citroen's 'Cloverleaf' 17 inch alloys and Michelin 205/45R17 88V low-profile tyres.

I knew these would produce a harsh ride, but didn't want to lose the deal, and anyway I like the look of the wheels.

I suspect you would advise swopping to standard wheels, but if I keep them what 'normal' tyres (ie not low profile) can you suggest?

You can't. If you want to fit deeper profile tyres you have to switch to smaller 16" or 15" wheels to get the same rolling circumference.
