Was the BMW E30 323i an automatic?

Having owned A BMW E30 323i in the late eighties, I am sure that I had the manual model but definitely with 'kickdown'. My son disagrees and says it was an automatic model!

The E30 323i was available with either a five-speed Getrag manual or a four-speed ZF automatic, before being replaced by the 325i in 1985.
