Can you recommend an SUV with a comfortable ride?

My wife has spinal nerve damage and finds most cars uncomfortable to ride in and difficult to get in and out.

We also have a large dog so large boot space is required.

My current car is a (2011) Land Rover Disco 4. Previously, I had a Citroen C5 estate, both of which tick the boxes for my wife. Her current car is a (2015) Volvo XC60 which she finds comfortable enough to drive but not as a passenger.

Whilst we do need a 4x4 (we live at the end of a rough drive and are subject to getting snowed in), it seems silly to own two 4x4 vehicles.

I do not (yet) want an electric only car but would consider a PHEV.

The question therefore is: what car next?

My feeling is probably a Citroen (or DS) SUV with 4WD capability but have not yet started seriously shopping due to Covid-19. We are both in our seventies with disabilities/illnesses that make us vulnerable.

We'd recommend a Citroen C5 Aircross. It's one of the most comfortable SUVs on the market today, with very supportive seats and easy access. It is available as a plug-in hybrid, which could work well if you cover a lot of short journeys, but it's no longer offered as a 4x4. Grip Control is available as an option – this is essentially an advanced traction control system which can optimise front wheel grip (ideal for tackling your rough driveway or snowy conditions). As an alternative, take a look at the Skoda Karoq or Kodiaq. Both are very comfortable SUVs available with 4x4.
